Sforzando String Camp

Activities

CHAPEL

Tuesday through Thursday, campers take part in chapel sessions which include singing of hymns, prayer, and a challenge from God’s Word. The speaker shares truths from the Bible which can be applied to each musician’s life.

CONCERTS

Campers will play in and attend several concerts of both sacred and classical music throughout the week. Attendance is required. Parents and guests are welcome and encouraged to attend at all events:

CLASSES

Chamber Groups

Specifically for Advanced campers, Chamber groups provide valuable opportunity for campers to work together in small ensembles. Practice is scheduled both with and without coaches.

NEW in 2011 — Advanced Tracks

Each Advanced Orchestra member will have the opportunity to choose a focus area for some of their classes during the week of camp. While campers can choose from Composition (writing and arranging music), Conducting (directing both choir and orchestra), and Pedagogy (teaching music, esp. strings), they will need to make this choice known on their registration form so we can properly prepare for each class. (Note: Requests from high school students in the Intermediate Orchestra who would like to participate in these tracks as their schedule allows should be submitted in writing and will be considered on an individual basis.)

Sectionals

Instructor-led practice times for each orchestra section are important for rehearsing specific passages or techniques. This additional practice strengthens the individual sections and maximizes the orchestra rehearsal times.

Technique

Beginner and Intermediate Campers have technique classes to teach good playing habits.

Rhythm

This class for Beginner Campers builds and strengthens elementary counting and note value reading in an active and fun way.

Music Theory

Campers take part in Music Theory classes at their own level. They are assigned to a level, which is determined by a brief theory placement test on Sunday afternoon during registration. These levels are not necessarily equivalent to the Orchestra levels.

Music History

Campers develop appreciation for great orchestral music by learning about the composer, his place in history, and how his work influenced music through the years. We strive to make the week’s music more meaningful by covering these areas relating to each of the composers.

“The Musical Mind”

This class was developed to provide a time for fun, learning, and a mental break. Campers review concepts learned and develop greater rhythmic precision, melodic memory, and a more precise ear through the use of friendly competition. For many campers, this is one of the favorite classes!
